'Snakes, Lizards and Giants!" Stories about sharing with Emily Duizend

We are delighted to be hosting a session by sotryteller Emily Duizend from Story Island (http://www.storyisland.net) who will be presenting "Snakes, Lizards and Giants!", a selection of modern and classical stories on the theme of sharing

Emily writes about her storytelling style:
"The stories I tell tend to be fictional, though not always. I love to tell stories rich in imagery, and to tell stories full of metaphors and meanings to be mined for precious gems.
My storytelling style is relaxed and intimate and often punctuated with music. This might be just me singing with my trusty ukulele or harmonica. Sometimes I may have some help from some of my wonderful musician friends or other storytellers.
I am experienced in telling stories to people of all ages and have told stories in primary schools, senior citizens centres, aged care homes, storytelling performance evenings, pubs and festivals."

Go on a Bear Hunt with Bill!

A great way to bring a book to life is by making sound effects to go along with your favourite story, and even recording these sounds to play the next time.

Join Tooting Children's Librarian Bill Bawden for a fun creative workshop with the aim of making a recording of Michael Rosen's classic "We're going on a Bear Hunt". Learn how to use everyday objects to make sounds such as splashing through rivers, squelching through mud and stumbling through forests!

The final recording will be made available to download for free and can be used to bring the story to life again and again!

Saturday May 11th, 10am - 11am, Tooting Childen's Library

This is a family event for children and their parents/carers, and is part of the Day of Stories.

Day of Stories - Nature Printing

We are delighted to be hosting a craft session with Transition Town Tooting on Saturday May 11th (Day of Stories), which will be taking place between 12 and 2.30:

Nature Printing

Come and try an unusual, historic and magical technique: printing from real leaves and plants.

We’ll collect springtime leaves in advance from across Tooting – or you can bring your own. Then during the session we’ll pass on this historic method for creating beautiful and detailed prints.

Hundreds of years ago artists used plant printing to share their discoveries and pass on their knowledge to botanists and libraries across Europe.

You’ll like this:

·         if you like trying new techniques (you can keep it simple, or make it complex)

·         if you are interested in looking at plants in a new way

·         if you like experimenting with textures, shapes, printing ink and rollers

·         if you want  to make cards, posters or presents to take home

If you would like to bring leaves from trees or garden plants you have found locally – please do.

Come at 12:00 for an introduction and we’ll show you how it works, or drop in anytime until 2:30.

All materials provided, and we can adapt this to all ages: all welcome!

Day of Stories - Saturday May 11th 2013

We 're very excited to announce that the second Day of Stories event at Tooting Library will be held on Saturday, May 11th, 10am - 4pm. Expect stories, adventures and crafts! Once again we will be teaming up with our friends from Transition Town Tooting to bring you this special day.

The event is aimed at children aged 5 -11, so come down at any time throughout the day to have fun in the Library!

Day of Stories 2012

Last year's day of stories was a lively all-day event held in conjuction with Transition Town Tooting and held at Tooting Library. Throughout the day children were treated to a variety of story sessions, featuring old classics as well as new favourites. Alison Royce led an entertaining storytelling session based around an alternative version of 'The Three Little Pigs', and Charles and Jane from Transition Town Tooting ran a craft workshop oon the subject of 'Visions of Tooting'.

A great day was had by all, but this year we hope Day of Stories can be even better and inspire more young people to read a story, tell a story, play a story, feel a story...
